The spirit of Staqeya has soared, earning both the Jury and People’s Choice Awards, and will be featured in Greenpeace Canada‘s magazine next spring!
About the image: This sculpture of Staqeya, the Lone Wolf of Discovery Island, was created by my good friend and talented artist, Kent Laforme.
Staqeya held deep significance for the local Indigenous tribes, but his life was cut short when a hunter tragically shot him after he returned to the mainland. The empty space in the sculpture aligns with Discovery Island, where Staqeya once roamed freely. To me, it symbolizes the bullet that ended his life.
I captured this image at Cattle Point on the morning the sculpture was unveiled. By pure chance, the sun shone through the void that day—a rare event that happens only twice a year.
